Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then found many other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking political figure said the attack rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
