Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
