Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
