A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
