The artist has given the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the Britain's small live music spots.

The star was presented with the award on October 16 as his third album People Watching was named the best record of the previous year.

Fender has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the crucial part local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his live tour to support thirty-eight small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported venues that were confronting potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in improving infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The notion that money from concerts in large arenas backs the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his award winnings to charitable organizations.

When the band earned the prize in the mid-90s for their album their work, lead singer Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would donate their prize money to the charity the charity.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her award among a few good causes, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I gave a £1,000 to the center, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," she explained to the media.

In recent years, the band contributed their prize money to the local youth club that developed their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners the group donated their prize to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the illness.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," remarked singer Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had saved two grassroots venues in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The first in Southampton and the other in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by a national body and supporters who buy "shares" in the properties.
